‘I hope to create an interactive and harmonious learning environment for my students. In the long run, I hope to become a role model for the younger generation.’
The Gold Award of the Outstanding Prospective Teacher Award 2016 organized by the Hong Kong Prospective Teachers Association came at the perfect time for Alvin Cheng Shing, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2016.
Alvin treated the experience of competing for the award as a learning process. He went through two selection rounds and passed the interview and teaching test with well-prepared materials and excellent teaching skills to become one of seven Gold Award recipients. The award set him apart from other fresh graduates and Alvin had already been offered a regular primary school teaching post at that time.
Alvin has aspired to be a teacher since he was a teen. Back in those days, he would always act as a tutor to his fellow classmates as well as to the kids in the neighbourhood. Talented at sport, he was encouraged by his PE teacher at secondary school to participate in an inter-school crosscountry competition. However, his family refused on account of his childhood asthma. The teacher was able to persuade Alvin’s mother to allow Alvin to take part in that competition, and many more since. ‘I was deeply impressed by that teacher’s belief in me at that time, and this reinforced my own determination to become a teacher,’ Alvin says.
Opportunities arise for the well-prepared
Alvin believes in being well-prepared for opportunities. The four-year double-degree programme was no easy undertaking. Despite his busy schedule, he made good use of his spare time to build additional skills. He has obtained qualifications in ball games and outdoor activities which will be useful in leading extra-curricular activities; he joined the After-school Learning Support Partnership Pilot Scheme organized by the Education Bureau, providing after-school homework guidance for primary school students from low-income families while polishing his teaching skills; he has completed a course on teaching with IT application and he plans to embark on a Postgraduate Diploma in Education specializing in PE. Prior to his six-week teaching placements in a primary school and a secondary school, Alvin worked hard designing teaching plans and materials which were well received by the teachers and students.
Inspiration for life
As a teacher, Alvin hopes to create an interactive and harmonious learning environment for his students. In the long run, he says, he hopes to become a role model for the younger generation.
